The history of African-Americans starts with slavery, as European settlers brought the first Africans to the country to serve as slaves. The destiny of slaves In the U.S. would divide the nation during the Civil War. Even after the war, racism and slavery would continue starting movements of resistance. Some of the most famous are the Underground Railroad, Selma to Montgomery March, Montgomery Bus Boycott, and many other movements. Through it, all black leaders, writers, artists, athletes, and political leaders would emerge and help shape the character and identity of not just African-Americans but the entire nation.
Slavery comes to North America, 1619.
To satisfy the labor needs of the growing North American colonies, white Europeans turned to a cheaper and more effective way to produce goods and make a profit. Instead, of having indentured servants to enslaved Africans. Starting around 1619, when a Dutch ship brought Africans ashore to the British colony of Jamestown, Virginia, slavery spread rapidly throughout American colonies.
